Where does silk come from?

Silk is produced by a natural fibre derived from the cocoon of the silk worm, which is then boiled and woven in many ways to create different textiles. Depending on the way that silk is woven it can be very heavy with a texture or very fine with a smooth surface, below are some images to depict the differing properties.
